The Masoretic text — every manuscript, every variant, every note — brought fully into view.
Open Masorah brings together experts in Masoretic studies, Hebrew codicology, machine learning, data science, and digital humanities to apply advanced computational tools to the study of the Masorah.
Project Overview
Open Masorah is developing a comprehensive, high-fidelity representation of the Masoretic tradition, grounded in the full scope of manuscript evidence.
The project seeks to document and present both the Hebrew Bible and accompanying Masorah in a critical manner, attending to the full range of features preserved in manuscript: consonantal text, vocalization, accents, and Masoretic notes, as well as page layout, individual scribal practices, and other paratextual elements.
For generations, much of this manuscript material has been dispersed across libraries, archives, and private collections, often difficult to access and nearly impossible to study comprehensively. Using machine learning models and data science, Open Masorah aims to identify, extract, and collate textual variants and Masoretic notes from all manuscript witnesses. In doing so, the project will transform material that has long been examined piecemeal into an organized, interconnected corpus that retains the precision and nuance of the original witnesses.
This makes possible a new mode of engagement with the Masorah. Instead of approaching each manuscript as an isolated witness, scholars will be able to search, collate, compare, and analyze material across manuscripts and different streams of transmission, allowing them to view the Masoretic text in relation to the broader system of notes, patterns, and traditions through which it was preserved.
At the same time, Open Masorah is committed to openness. The project is designed not as a closed institutional resource, but as a fully accessible platform, making this material available to researchers, students, and the broader public in a form that is comprehensive, transparent, and navigable.
